When Does the Window Close on Fall Seeding?

As we approach the end of September, many ask the question of when is it too late to seed?

Traditionally, our first frost is an early indication of the soil temps getting too cool to germinate grass seed and grow it mature enough to endure the winter. October 15 might be a good rule of thumb.

So we have no more than 3 weeks left of good seeding weather. Don’t panic, that is ample time to get seed in the ground, germinated, and matured.

With that said, if you miss the boat, don’t seed much later than mid October. Wait until the ground freezes in December or January, and spread the seed over the frozen ground. It will freeze and thaw into the soil and germinate in early spring. I have used this technique many times with great success. Works great around trees where you fight leaves all fall and don’t get the seed out in time due to chasing leaves in October!
