Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to aerate my lawn?
Whenever the turf is actively growing
and not stressed. Also, prior to over seeding is a great time to aerate
your turf. This helps increase your seed to soil contact, which is
necessary for good seeding results.
How do I get rid of moles in my
turf?
Use impaling type traps such as those
made by Victor. Find a long and straight run (tunnel). These are used
by moles on a regular basis. Mash down the run with your feet. Now
set the trap over this run. It helps to test the trap by repeatedly
tripping it. This ensures that the trap will release properly when
it is tripped by a mole. Check these traps frequently.
Why is professional Preen better
than regular Preen commonly found at local retailers?
Preen is a pre-emergent weed control.
Professional Preen combines two active ingredients for control of
both grassy and broadleaf weeds. Regular Preen contains only one active
that will control only grassy weeds.
When is the best time of year to
fertilize trees and shrubs?
Typically, plants benefit the most
from fertility when they are actively growing, have adequate moisture,
and not subject to stress factors.
When is the best time to kill the
weeds in my yard?
Fall is the best time to kill your
weeds in your yard. As weeds are going into dormancy, they are absorbing
as much nutrients as they can. Therefore if you apply herbicide at
that time, they will absorb it also, resulting in a total kill of
the weed.
When is the best time to put down
crabgrass control?
In the spring, usually around April
1. With wet weather, a 2nd application 6 weeks later may be needed.
When seeding my lawn, how many pounds
of seed do I use?
Seeding fescue takes 350-400 pounds
per acre, or 8-10 pounds per 1,000 sq. ft., for new seeding. Adjust
the rate in half for general over seeding to thicken up the turf.
At what height should my mower be set for Spring/Fall?
3 to 3 ½ inches depending on
turf grass species. This height works well for fescue and/or bluegrass.
Pick a height and stick with it year round.
Do I really need a starter fertilizer
when I seed?
Yes. A starter fertilizer contains
a significant amount of phosphorus (middle number on fertilizer bag)
which helps promote seedling emergence and rooting.
Can I seed and use weed control
products at the same time?
Most weed control products will state
on the label to wait 30 days after application to do any seeding.
Always read the label before applying weed control.
When is the best time to fertilize
trees?
Spring and fall.
Spring-March
Fall-after Oct. 1
When should I trim my shrubs?
Early blooming shrubs (those that bloom
before Memorial Day) trim after they bloom, mid summer bloomers can
trim early spring as they bloom on that year's growth.
When is the best time to plant trees?
Spring for most trees is best. After
ground thaws but before May 1st.
Fall is also good for many but there are some exceptions (local garden
centers can give details) After September and up until ground freezes.
