Zoysiagrass
Zoysia Grass is grown successfully in our climate. Zoysia makes a beautiful lawn with a fine to medium textured leaf. Zoysiagrass is known to survive as far north as Chicago. It originated from areas in Southeast Asia, China and Japan. It is a low growing, creeping grass, heat resistant, wiry, very comfortable under the bare foot. Zoysia is slow to establish but aggressive and competes with weeds for its own space. Zoysia is a warm season grass that can be grown further north than many of the other warm season grasses. It makes one of the most beautiful, carpeted lawns when fully established. Great for lawns and golf courses, while potentially too slow recovery for sports field use.
COMPADRE
Compadre is a superior seed-type zoysiagrass. Introduced in 2005, it is recommended for golf course tees, fairways, home lawns, and other general turf areas.
- Germinates in 14-21 days, early summer planting (June/July)
- Medium dark green
- Excellence summer stress
- Leaf texture is medium-fine, similar to Meyer zoysia
- Very good winter hardiness
Seeding rate is 1-2 lbs of seed per 1,000 sq. ft. Seed in bare soil. Broadcast the seed at the soil surface and incorporate very lightly with raking, light mulch or a roller. The seed needs light to germinate, so the seed should be very near the surface. Water frequently in order to get all the seed to germinate.
Compadre can make a dense stand of grass in approximately 12 weeks of summer heat.
Meyer
Meyer is the most popular in our climate, an improved strain of zoysia japonica, it is a single plant selection taken from 50-odd selections of common zoysia japonica grown from seed by the United States Department of Agriculture in 1940. Meyer zoysia’s leaf width is between common zoysia japonica and zoysia matrella. Zoysia is more cold tolerant than practically all other varieties of zoysia. Established turf is quite dense and has a dark green color during the growing season. After first frost, Meyer zoysia turns a brownish yellow or blonde in the winter. Only available in sod and sprigs.
