Seeding This Spring Can Be Tricky with Crabgrass Preventers
Seeding lawns this spring will be popular due to the poor fall conditions. This can prove to be tricky when you also need to get a crabgrass preventer down in a timely manner.
Purdue has shown studies where Dimension Crabgrass Preventer applied after seed emergence works and does not harm the new grass.
It is safe at a week after emergence but I would try to get as many weeks as possible before application.
My advice to those seeding this spring:
- Seed now, use our Green Alliance Fescue Blend
- Spread our Green Alliance Starter Fertilizer 13-25-10 with the seed
- Spread our 5-0-20 Dimension after emergence, no sooner than 7 days after but 2-3 weeks is more ideal.
This suggestion will let you get the seed germinated and growing and still get your Dimension down by late April. Use only Dimension, don’t try Barricade or Pendimethalin, there are no studies confirming its safety.
Another Option is Drive Herbicide Spray
If you choose to seed and skip the Dimension, Drive is an option for spot spraying what crabgrass comes up later this spring. Again, Purdue showed no harm on brand new grass, tall fescue in particular. We have Drive available in small bottles for pump sprayers. Use a methylated seed oil with it for sticking on the crabgrass, we have it.
Good Luck this Spring!
