While we are enjoying warmer days this winter, it might be a good time to pull soil samples to get your fertility plan in order for 2012. As you know, spring will be here before you know it. Call us if we can help with getting samples to an accredited lab and assist in developing an affordable fertility plan for your turf.

Cool season grasses, like tall fescue,  tend to slow down leaf growth in the fall to produce more roots for storage reserves.  Fertilizing in late November encourages leaf growth only slightly while greatly enhancing root production and storage.  This results in denser and healthier turf year round.

Try our Green Alliance 30-0-8 Winterizer for your lawn.

We are reaching the end of our ideal seeding window.  If you have seeding to do, get it done by Oct 15…..2 weekends left.

As we approach the end of September, many ask the question of when is it too late to seed?

Traditionally, our first frost is an early indication of the soil temps getting too cool to germinate grass seed and grow it mature enough to endure the winter.  October 15 might be a good rule of thumb.

So we have no more than 3 weeks left of good seeding weather.  Don’t panic, that is ample time to get seed in the ground, germinated, and matured.

With that said, if you miss the boat, don’t seed much later than mid October.  Wait until the ground freezes in December or January, and spread the seed over the frozen ground.  It will freeze and thaw into the soil and germinate in early spring.  I have used this technique many times with great success.  Works great around trees where you fight leaves all fall and don’t get the seed out in time due to chasing leaves in October!

Good luck!

Traditionally, September is the best month of the year for lawn work.  Unfortunately, we see dry days in September, and we have to wait and wonder when the rains will come in order to renovate lawns and turf.  Last year we waited almost too long to get good establishment.  Some seedings did good, some didn’t.

This Fall now looks to be different.  With a substantial amount of rainfall occurring, the soil should be ideal for renovation.  It is time to go.

Get your seed and fertilizer picked up.  If you’ve done a soil test with us and it shows a need for lime or gypsum, get that too.  Rent your favorite aerator or slice seeder/dethatcher.

Remember seeding rates:

  • 5 lbs per 1,000 sq. ft. for general overseeding an existing lawn (increase that 30-40% if the lawn is thin)
  • 10 lbs per 1,000 sq. ft. for new lawn install or bare dirt
Don’t forget our starter fertilizer with seeding, Green Alliance 13-25-10.  One bag per 10,000 sq. ft..  If you have a smaller yard, put half on at seeding, half on in 30 days.
If you’re going to the trouble of seeding, do it right and spend the time and monies to get the best result possible:
  • use the right seed rates
  • use a starter fertilizer, 13-25-10 Green Alliance Seed Starter
  • don’t just throw seed on top of the ground
  • rake, aerate, or powerseed
  • don’t forget your winterizer application of fertilizer around Thanksgiving, 30-0-8 Green Alliance Winterizer
Its time to go, good luck.

We are excited to announce our new partnership with Redox Chemical. They are a market leader in plant and soil nutrition, producing a wide range of specialty fertilizers for the agricultural, turf and ornamentals markets.

Redox employs advanced production systems that combine chemistry and biotechnology, designed to manufacture the most efficient plant nutrition solutions available. More importantly, Redox personnel provide solutions with intergrity, passion and the highest of standards.

  • Environmental Responsibility
  • Research and Development
  • Technical Services
  • Commitment to Quality
In a nutshell, we feel the application of plant nutrition will be changing in the near future due to environmental impacts.  It is a smaller dose of fertilizer, efficiently provided to the plant, with no residual layover that can be tied up in the soil, leached through the soil, or soil runoff.  All of these issues can create a negative environmental impact.  The idea of giving the plant what it needs, when it needs it, is the way of the future in our minds.  It is revolutionary in the agriculture market and will do the same in turf.
Plus, it is very affordable for large acreage turf, not just small areas like putting greens.  Golf course fairways, roughs, sports complexes, and sod farms are all viable options with budgets in mind.  We think it will compliment our Grigg Bros product line we hold so dearly in our portfolio.
We feel fortunate and excited to be on board with such an innovative product line.  RedoxTurf products are available now.  Go to www.redoxturf.com for much more information on these products.
